How to Fold a Menstrual Cup: C-Fold, Punch-Down and 7-Fold

Trying a menstrual cup for the first time? The fold you choose changes how narrow the cup feels during insertion and how easily it opens afterward. There is no single best fold for everyone. Start with a clean cup, follow its manufacturer's instructions and try the method that feels comfortable.

Three folds worth knowing

1. C-fold: the simplest starting point

Press the cup flat, then fold it in half so the rim looks like the letter C when viewed from above. Hold the folded rim together as you insert it. This is easy to remember, although the folded tip can be wider than with other methods.

2. Punch-down fold: a smaller insertion tip

Place a finger on one edge of the rim and push it down into the cup. Pinch the sides together to hold the narrow point. This can feel easier to insert, but some cups need a little extra adjustment to unfold fully once inside.

3. 7-fold: a narrow corner with a simple shape

Flatten the rim, then bring one top corner diagonally down toward the opposite side, forming the shape of a 7. Hold the fold securely while inserting. Release it gently and check that the cup has opened.

Which fold should you try first?

  • If you want the easiest technique to remember: try the C-fold.
  • If the folded rim feels too wide: try punch-down or 7-fold.
  • If your cup does not open after insertion: try a different fold, adjust its position gently and check the manufacturer's instructions. Do not force it.

Different cup shapes and firmness levels behave differently. A technique that works with one cup might not work as well with another.

How to check the cup after insertion

Wash your hands before handling your cup. Find a comfortable position and insert the folded cup slowly, aiming slightly toward your tailbone rather than straight upward. Once released, the cup should open and sit comfortably. If the base feels noticeably folded or the cup leaks, it may not have opened fully. Gently adjust it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Insertion should not be painful. Stop if you feel persistent pain or significant discomfort and seek medical advice when needed. When removing the cup, pinch its base to release the seal rather than pulling only on the stem.

Using a cup when you are away from home in Pakistan

Plan around access to clean water and a clean place to wash your hands. Follow your particular cup's cleaning and emptying instructions, including its maximum wear time. If you cannot clean it properly, use another suitable period product until you can. Do not rely on a folding technique to compensate for the wrong cup size or a damaged cup.
